How do I fix c000021a fatal system error?

1. Update/uninstall the problematic driver

  1. Press Windows key + X and choose Device Manager.
  2. Locate the device that you suspect that is causing the issue.
  3. Right-click it and choose Uninstall device.
  4. If available, check Remove driver software for this device and click on Uninstall.

In some cases, you need to update your drivers, and you can do this by following these steps:

  1. Visit your device manufacturer’s website.
  2. Locate your model on the list.
  3. Go to the Drivers section. Now locate the latest driver and download it.
  4. Once the driver is downloaded, run the setup file to install it.

After updating or reinstalling your drivers, the c000021a error will be gone.

2. Run SFC/DISM scan outside Windows

To complete this solution, you need to create Windows installation media on a working PC.
  1. Boot from Windows installation media.
  2. Select your setup language and go to Repair your computer.
  3. Navigate to Troubleshoot and select Advanced Options. Lastly, choose Command Prompt.
  4. Enter bcdedit command and look for device setting. Memorize the letter after the partition value.
  5. Run the following command sfc /scannow /offbootdir=D:\ /offwindir=D:\windows
  6. Wait for the scan to finish.
  7. If the problem is still there, you can use the following command as well: dism /image:D:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions
  8. Optional: You can also run the following command: chkdsk c: /r

In steps 5 and 7, you need to use the same letter that you got in step 4, so don’t just copy and paste the commands from above.

If you can access Windows you can fix the c000021a error by doing the following:

  1. Press Windows key + X and choose Windows Terminal (Admin).
  2. Now run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  3. Wait for it to finish.
  4. Next run sfc /scannow
  5. After both commands are completed, check if the problem is still there.
